Since I created my Instagram account for my blog, I discovered a wonderful community. It can be surprising, but there are many programmers on this social network! On a network like Instagram, hashtags make all the difference to find accounts that are similar to ours and make new connections (in other words, get more followers). A while ago, the hashtag ilooklikeanengineer was very popular, but there are many others to know!
As with anything related to women in technology, I had difficulty finding right hashtags to use to connect with others like me when I first started. To help us reach out to each other, I thought I’d create a list of the best hashtags to use when sharing our photos! Some can also very well apply to any other programmer, no matter your gender!

First, a little trick to go faster when typing Instagram Hashtags
How do I write my hashtags?
I will explain the technique I use to quickly write my hashtags. On Instagram, it is important to write a comment (or to put the hashtags in the caption of the photo) as soon as it is published if you want to have the most engagement possible. This is because of an enormous number of photos are posted every minute on the social network. The more you wait, the more your photo will be low in the search for photos by hashtag.
As most of the time I take my photos on the go (e.g., my food in front of my computer – I can’t wait to eat it!), having to write all my hashtags one per one every time was unpleasant. Fortunately, I found a trick to go faster: use the text replacement function on my iPhone!
Go to Settings > General > Keyboard > Text Replacement.
Clic on the + shown in the left picture to add a new replacement. Then, you will get on the screen shown on the right. In the “phrase” input, write the 30 hashtags you want to use in your pictures. In shortcut, write the shortcut you will write to use them!
The words “instastudy1”, “instaprog1”, etc., are combinations of hashtags I previously saved. So, if I write “instastudy1” anywhere on my iPhone, the associated hashtag list will be suggested. Here is a video of all it works so it’s clear for you:
You can also add text replacements from your iOS computer. Simply click on the Apple, go to System Preferences > Keyboard > Text > and you can add text replacements directly from your computer.
Do you have an Android phone?
You can set text replacements too! This functionality is called a “Personal Dictionnary”. I haven’t test this because I don’t have an Android phone, but to add text replacements, go to Settings > Language and Input > Google Keyboard > Text Correction > Personal Dictionary. There, select the language to which you would like to make the addition.
Then, click on the + just like I shown in my pictures, and you should be good to go!

Women Empowerment Hashtags
I have not checked all of the hashtags one by one – that would take too much time. But you should know you can get more engagement (likes + comments) if you use hashtags that have less than 1 million pictures!

Conclusion
It’s impossible to list all the possible hashtags, but I think this is a good start! Let me know in the comments if I forgot about some obvious ones, I would be happy to add them!

That’s so cool. I didn’t know about text replacement. I’m going to give this a try. Thanks, Marie. 🙂
No problem! I’m glad I could help! The text reason is how I manage to diverse my hashtags from one picture to another! 😀
Thank you for your comment!
Marie
I usually go back and forth between my old post and copy them to clipboard, but this technique is really clever! Great tips
Personally, I have notes in Google keep with all my hashtags and different variations so it doesn’t look so copy/pasted..
Anyway… I tested for Android and it works ! Really cool trick ! However, there is a limit of character that can be input (around 3hashtags) … :/
I talked to you in private already, but why do you think it’s bad to copy paste hashtags? I mean, even before I used text replacements, I always ended up using the same hashtags because I’d forgot about some new ones I could use! 🙂
It’s unfortunate for the limit of characters 🙁 at least it’s better than nothing lol!
